Tae Kwon Do Tots

Play · Grow · Learn

Ages 3–4, 30-Minute Class, Beginners Through Black Star

Tae Kwon Do Tots is our developmentally focused introduction to traditional Tae Kwon Do created specifically for preschool-aged children. At this age, learning martial arts isn't just about mastering kicks, punches, and blocks. Children are also learning how to participate in a class, listen and respond to an instructor, communicate with others, follow directions, take turns, manage their bodies, and try something that may be new or challenging.

Our 30-minute class combines introductory Tae Kwon Do training with movement, play, and preschool developmental activities. Students begin learning foundational techniques such as front kicks, side kicks, punches, blocks, and strikes while developing the physical and social skills that will prepare them for continued martial arts training.

Learning Through Movement

Preschoolers learn best when they are actively engaged. Activities may incorporate colors, shapes, sorting, counting, directional concepts, balance, coordination, fine and gross motor skills, memory, communication, and problem-solving.

Games and activities have a purpose, but they still feel like play to our Tots.

Students also begin practicing important group-learning skills such as waiting for a turn, maintaining personal space, transitioning between activities, listening for instructions, and completing a task as part of a group.

Their First Steps in Traditional Tae Kwon Do

Although the teaching approach is designed for preschoolers, Tae Kwon Do Tots introduces children to the traditions and expectations they will encounter as they continue their martial arts training.

Students practice bowing, meditation, our membership oath, basic martial arts etiquette, listening to their instructor, and showing respect for their classmates and training space.

The goal isn't perfection. The goal is development.

We want each child to become a little more comfortable participating, communicating, moving, listening, trying, and learning—with plenty of opportunities to have fun along the way.

Optional Tot Time Before Class

Tots may also participate in Tot Time, an optional 30-minute pre-class period for play and exploration. It gives children additional opportunities to move, interact, explore activities, and become comfortable in the training environment before structured class begins.

Play. Grow. Learn. And take those first exciting steps into Tae Kwon Do.

YouthTae Kwon Do

Learn · Practice

Ages 5–13, 60-Minute Class, Beginners Through Purple Belt

Youth Tae Kwon Do provides children with a strong foundation in traditional Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do while giving them an environment where they can challenge themselves, make mistakes, develop skills, and experience the satisfaction that comes from genuine progress.

Students learn traditional martial arts techniques including kicks, strikes, blocks, forms, partner drills, sparring, and self-defense. As students progress, techniques become more complex and expectations increase appropriately with their experience and rank.

But learning the physical techniques is only part of their training.

Learning How to Learn

Martial arts gives children regular opportunities to practice skills that are valuable far beyond the training floor.

Students are expected to listen, follow directions, accept constructive feedback, practice something they may not immediately be good at, and try again when something doesn't work.

They learn that making a mistake isn't the end of an attempt—it's information they can use to improve the next one.

Over time, this process helps students develop focus, discipline, resilience, self-control, confidence, accountability, and perseverance. These qualities aren't simply talked about in class. They are practiced through the experience of training.

Progress Is Earned

Students progress through our Tae Kwon Do curriculum as their knowledge, technique, effort, and ability develop.

Every student progresses differently. Some skills come quickly. Others require considerably more practice. Our goal isn't to rush children toward the next belt, but to help them understand the value of working toward something that takes time and effort to achieve.

That makes each new skill, successful challenge, and earned rank meaningful.

Training Together

Youth students become part of a larger martial arts community.

They work with instructors, experienced students, and training partners of different ages and ability levels. They learn to practice cooperatively, encourage others, demonstrate respect, take responsibility for their own training, and eventually help newer students develop.

As students gain experience, they aren't only becoming more capable martial artists—they begin discovering how they can contribute to the development of others.

Optional Youth Skill Drill

Students can also participate in Skill Drill – Explore · Practice · Challenge, an optional 30-minute pre-class training period.

Skill Drill gives students additional time to explore martial arts movement, practice familiar skills, work through challenges, and interact with their training partners in a less structured environment before formal Tae Kwon Do class begins.

Build skills. Work through challenges. Earn progress. Grow through training.

All Ranks All Ages Tae Kwon Do

Train Together

Ages 5 through Adult, 60-Minute Class, Beginners Through Black Belt

All Ranks · All Ages Tae Kwon Do is at the heart of Blue Wave's multigenerational training community. Children, teens, adults, beginners, experienced students, and black belts share the training floor—each working at their own level while learning from and supporting one another.

This is traditional Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do taught the way we believe martial arts is meant to be practiced: through consistent training, meaningful challenge, individual responsibility, and strong relationships with instructors and training partners.

One Class. Many Levels of Training.

Sharing the floor doesn't mean everyone is expected to do exactly the same thing.

Students work on skills appropriate to their rank, experience, and ability. Training includes kicks, strikes, blocks, forms, partner drills, sparring, self-defense, and conditioning, with expectations and complexity increasing as students develop.

Beginners benefit from training around experienced martial artists who can demonstrate, encourage, and help guide them. More advanced students are challenged not only to improve their own technique, but also to become knowledgeable, dependable training partners and leaders.

Everyone has something to learn—and eventually, something to teach.

Training Across Generations

One of the most unique aspects of Blue Wave is the opportunity for people who might rarely interact in everyday life to train together.

Children may practice beside parents, teenagers alongside adults, and beginning students with martial artists who have trained for many years. Families can pursue a shared activity while still working toward individual goals, and students develop training friendships across ages, professions, backgrounds, and walks of life.

These relationships create accountability, mentorship, shared purpose, and a genuine sense of belonging that becomes an important part of the training experience.

Challenge at Every Stage

There is no point at which Tae Kwon Do becomes something you've finished learning.

As students progress, the challenges change. Technique becomes more refined. Expectations increase. Students learn new material while continuing to improve skills they may have practiced hundreds—or thousands—of times before.

Training requires students to accept constructive feedback, learn from mistakes, work through frustration, remain composed under pressure, and continue when progress feels difficult.

Those experiences are part of what makes traditional martial arts valuable well beyond the dojang.

You Don't Have to Be “In Shape” to Start

Adults sometimes believe they need to become stronger, more flexible, or more physically fit before beginning martial arts. Beginners of every age may also worry about keeping up with students who have more experience.

You don't need to prepare yourself for Tae Kwon Do before coming to Tae Kwon Do.

You begin where you are.

Your strength, coordination, flexibility, endurance, knowledge, and confidence develop through training. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves appropriately while respecting their individual abilities and limitations.

Whether you're 5 or 55, stepping onto the training floor for the first time or tying on a black belt, there is always another skill to develop and another challenge ahead.

Train at your level. Learn from each other. Keep growing.

Tae Kwon Do Workshop

Focused Practice · Deeper Learning · Stronger Skills

All Ages Yellow Belt and Above, 60-Minute Class

TKD Workshop is a focused training class that gives students additional time to explore specific areas of Tae Kwon Do beyond the pace of a regular class.

Each workshop centers around a particular skill, technique, training concept, or area of development. Topics may include forms, kicking technique, sparring, self-defense, partner drills, breaking, conditioning, advanced applications, or preparation for upcoming training goals.

The workshop format allows instructors and students to slow things down, ask questions, experiment, make corrections, and spend more time practicing than may be possible during a traditional class.

Workshop topics will change, so each class offers a different opportunity to strengthen familiar skills, explore something new, or gain a deeper understanding of your Tae Kwon Do training.

Come with questions. Be ready to practice. Leave with something to work on.

TKO 30 Fitness

Move Better

Ages 14-Adult or Youth Yellow Belts and Above 30-Minute Fitness Class

TKO 30 is a fast-paced, efficient fitness class designed to complement Tae Kwon Do training while also providing a complete workout on its own.

The class combines mobility, strength, cardio, and kickboxing in a focused 30-minute format. Whether you're a martial artist looking to improve the physical qualities that support your training or simply want an engaging alternative to a traditional gym workout, TKO 30 is designed to get you moving.

Start With the Foundation

The first 10–12 minutes of each class follow a consistent series of exercises focused on mobility, stability, strength, and healthy joint movement.

These movements target areas particularly important for Tae Kwon Do—including the hips, knees, ankles, shoulders, and core—and are designed to help participants move more comfortably and build a stronger foundation for training.

Because this portion of class is repeatable, participants have an opportunity to become familiar with the movements and recognize their own progress over time.

Then We Turn Up the Intensity

The second half of TKO 30 changes from class to class and may include:

  • Kickboxing combinations and heavy bag work

  • Strength and functional resistance exercises

  • Bodyweight training

  • Cardio intervals

  • Martial arts-inspired conditioning

  • Core and balance work

Some days you'll punch and kick. Some days you'll lift. Some days you'll work up a serious sweat doing a little of everything.

Train for What You Want Your Body to Do

TKO 30 isn't about complicated choreography or keeping up with everyone else in the room. Exercises can be adjusted for different fitness levels, allowing participants to challenge themselves appropriately while continuing to develop strength, endurance, mobility, and confidence in their movement.

For Tae Kwon Do students, it's an opportunity to train the body that supports your martial art. For everyone else, it's simply a challenging, varied and efficient way to get stronger and move more.

30 minutes. Purposeful movement. A stronger foundation for whatever you train for.
